Four Things Friday

new hair, sushi, girlfriends, hidden gems
It's officially summer!  WOOT-WOOT.  Here are four things that made this week a whole lot brighter for me.  I think I'm finally emerging from the post-traumatic career blues thanks to good friends, good food, a good hair stylist, and good neighbors.  And also a really good husband, but I don't like to mention him much, because this is after all a break-up blog and I have a rep to protect.

New Hair, New Life
I'm a big believer in the stuck in a rut haircut and since I've been feeling a little stale these last few weeks, I decided I needed a confidence boost.  And also, shoulder length hair is the worst on me.  If you are going through the throes of heartbreak, I highly recommend a new do (see Sliding Doors).  Anyway, I decided a long time ago that I fall under the category of "cute" and nothing embraces that label more than the bob cut.  Side note: Don't judge me for the selfies, it's not because I'm vain, it's because I'm a control freak and I love instagram filters. And I promise I still find them ridiculously embarrassing (especially b/c the filters don't remove the dark circles under my eyes). Anyway, if you live in the LA area and want a great hair stylist, I highly recommend going to Lucas in Echo Park.  Ask for Lisa.

Omakase! (Sushi Nishi-ya, 1712 Victory Blvd, Glendale CA)
I finally found a good sushi place in Silverlake.  Okay, it's actually in Glendale, but close enough.   The H-Bomb and I had a date night at Sushi Nishi-ya and sat at the bar to eat sushi the way it's meant to be eaten: omakase.  That means it's the chef's choice (which Umamimart ladies, correct me if I'm wrong, but the term omakase comes from the Japanese "to entrust"?). Don't worry, they do ask you what kind of fish you don't like so you won't get stuck pretending to like something you hate.  Luckily for the chef at Sushi Nishi-ya, the H-bomb and I eat it all.  Even though I felt like we were cheating on our favorite sushi place on San Vicente, Sushi Nishi-ya was legit.  If you're an adventurous eater, this is a great place to bring a date to see if your palates are compatible.  But be warned, depending on how many courses you have, this place is not cheap.
One of my pet peeves is girls who don't manage a healthy balance of hanging out with their friends once they've shacked up with someone.  I try to hang out with g-friends at least once or twice a week.  The above pic was taken last Saturday at a book club gathering/pool party at one of my gf's houses.  I sort of feel like this picture puts the NY vs LA argument to rest (LA for the win!)  We started this book club about four years ago and we've gone through many life events together, good and bad (engagements, break-ups, weddings) and last Saturday we learned that one of our ladies is pregnant!  It's our first book club baby!
Hidden Gems
There are a lot of hidden gems in my neighborhood, but this is one of my favorites.  The house down the street from us always has new poems for people passing by.  It cheers me up when it's six in the morning and I'm forced to walk my dog.  I still have no idea who lives there, but it's just a nice reminder that no matter what any of us are going through, there are still thoughtful people out there in the world (unless of course they have people hidden in their basement and this whole "take a poem" thing is just a cover.)

Anyway, enjoy the longest day of the year and the first weekend of summer.  Here's hoping all you single folks have a steamy summer fling that turns into a life-long romance.  If it happened for Danny and Sandy, it can happen for you.

  1. Love your new haircut!
Also love insta and their filters! I suggest downloading vscocam...many more filters and they just seem to make your picture even more lovely than you can imagine! :)

    Happy weekend to you! :Cheers!

  2. i LOVE LOVE your new haircut! well done! i'll hold back on going on and on about how many societies around the world and through time have cut their hair after a big event (like a break up). it's instinct!

  3. Thank you ladies! Tiffay, thanks for the tip, I need to all the fancy filters I can get my hands on! And Film Girl, maybe we need to do a whole post on the break up haircut. People can send in before and after shots!
