is Halloween the new Valentine's Day?

Is it possible that there's another holiday that puts couples more front and center than Valentine's Day?  Guys, there is.  It's Halloween.  I'm part of a couple and I'm jealous of couples on Halloween.  Here's why:

The H-Bomb and I have been together for  eight years and I know that he HATES Halloween and never wants to get dressed up, and every year I try to get him to change his mind.  And he never does.  I've spent most Halloweens without him.  The above photo was the best I could do to get him to dress up one year-- and we didn't go out anywhere-- this was purely a Facebook photo-op. (It's also a terrible picture which goes to show how far I will go to prove a point.)

I'm not even that into Halloween myself.  I think anyone who doesn't list Thanksgiving as their favorite holiday is effing nuts....BUT I'm a total sucker for those couples costumes.  They are so darn cute.  I hate myself for thinking that, but it's the truth.  And before Bry, I'd never been serious enough with a guy on Halloween to suggest we dress up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 together.  I'm so desperate to be part of couples costume that I once tried to convince my bestie that we should go as Woody & Soon-Yi (She's Asian so I would have had to be Woody.) The closest I ever got to one was when my Irish bestie and I dressed up like it was St. Paddy's Day on Halloween (hilarious, right? Wait, what was that? It's super lame and not hilarious?  shut up, I hate you.)

Everywhere I look this time of year, there are people in cute couples costumes.  I once almost died of envy and adorableness when I saw a picture on Facebook of my friend Karin and her boyfriend Chris dressed up as the old man and the little boy from Up.  One year, my friend Toby and her husband Henry went as Black Swan and White Swan.  This year, she dressed up as Rosemary from Rosemary's Baby and he dressed up as Satan (she's pregnant in real life by the way.)  My bestie Alison and her fiance Jesse's go-to couples costume is the Blues Brothers and they look freaking adorable.  Even my dog is going as Ernie and her doggy best friend is going as Bert.

I'm going as a hippie, but what I'm really dying to dress up as is Lois Lane.  Why?  Well, for starters newspaper women are super hot, but mostly because Bry would make the perfect Clark Kent.  He actually once had a homeless person stop him on the street to tell him he looks like him.  I keep telling him: all he has to do is wear a suit with a superman T-shirt underneath, but he told me this year he will NEVER dress up as Clark Kent so I need to stop asking.  And that's okay.  I need to respect that. What are the chances I can talk him into this costume next year?

  1. Haha, I think anyone who doesn't list Thanksgiving as their favorite holiday is crazy too! :-)

  2. I LOVE Halloween, it's my favorite holiday (sorry) and was just telling my friend that I didn't think it was going to work out with the guy I'm currently dating because he doesn't like dressing up. She told me that's not a deal breaker! I beg to differ....

  3. We need more mannequins!!!

  4. Sara, Stop picking on H-Bomb.
I totally feel for him, I don't like Halloween, and I don't like dressing up for it. It feels like a mandatory fun to me. such a dark holiday....
