Mark Darcy is dead?!

Okay, so I've never read Bridget Jones's Diary-- but I've seen the movie countless times and it never gets old.  It's possibly my all time favorite rom-com, mainly because it's one of the first films with a flawed and funny and awkward main character.  A girl who wears grandma undies and eats too much ice cream and drinks too much wine.  A girl who gets her heart trampled on by Hugh Grant, but still has Collin Firth waiting for her in the wings.  It's even got a fight scene set to the song It's Raining Men.  What more could you want from a movie?

Admittedly, Edge of Reason was not all that great.  It was a bit of a retread and Bridget in a Thai jail was just way too random.  BUT it was still good to know that like most of us, even when Bridget finally found love, she still managed to self-sabotage it.

SO: author Helen Fielding has released Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (the third book in the series) and SHE'S KILLED OFF MARK DARCY.

Yes, Mark Darcy as in "I like you very much. Just as you are." As in hot Collin Firth.  This is a tragedy of epic proportions.  This is a major blow off to the fans of the franchise.  This is worse than killing off Ned Stark! This just perpetuates the stereotype that happy couples are boring.  But they don't have to be.  Apparently, in the third book-- Mark dies and Bridget is left raising their two children by herself.  Why couldn't we see Bridget & Mark navigating the choppy waters of parenthood together?  I suppose it will be fun to see her date again, but even then they could have just gotten a divorce.  One fan of the book tweeted: "Let me get this straight... There's one nice guy in the world and he dies?!"

Maybe it's because Collin Firth is too famous now and wouldn't do a third movie?  I'm not sure.  All I know is the only thing that can make this better is if Henry Cavill plays her new younger love interest in the next film.

  1. Well that is the most depressing thing I've experienced all week. And I've spent the entire week with the stomach flu.
