Should we BLOW OFF the Oscars?

Let me start this post by confessing that I LOVE a good awards show. I'll watch them all... the oscars, the golden globes, SAG, the independent spirit awards, grammys, the emmys, the VMAs, the AMAs, the Kid's Choice awards, the BET awards, the ESPYS... I draw the line at People's Choice, the Tonys, and the CMA's BUT you get it. I'm a little obsessed. As a child, I used to wake up at 5:30 in the morning so I could watch the Oscar nominations get announced live. What can I say? I love watching rich, successful, gorgeous people win trophies and make speeches.  SO when you say that awards shows don't matter, all I can respond with is: THEY MATTER TO ME.

Which is why the Oscar nominations were such a low point this morning.  Here are a few reasons.

The serious lack of diversity. This has to be the first year in a long time that every single actor nominated is WHITE.

The best picture list are all films about men.

Of the twenty-eight producers nominated under best picture, only six are women-- and that's actually pretty good.

In the adapted screenplay and original screenplay category, all the nominees are men. So... Gillian Flynn wrote Gone Girl-- a best-selling book that became a national phenomenon but didn't get nominated for her excellent adaptation? Did anyone see Inherent Vice? I know Thomas Pynchon books are cray-cray, but it made no sense.

All the best director nominees are men. In a year that everyone expected Ava Duvernay (director of Selma) to take home the award-- she didn't even get nominated. I hate to say it, but I feel like voters were like "a movie about black people won last year, so been there, done that."

I get screeners. I saw a lot of the movies. I realize it's all subjective, but American Sniper (AKA Hurt Locker Lite) was mediocre.  And Foxcatcher was too much style and not enough substance. What do both these films have in common? They both have Sienna Miller in them playing the wife. In Foxcatcher, she literally does nothing. I didn't even know it was Sienna Miller until the credits rolled. In American Sniper, she's literally there just to ask Bradley Cooper's character if he's okay.

Before you think I'm just a supporter of women and minorities, where was the love for Jake Gyllenhaal?! He was SO good in Nightcrawler, which in my opinion was one of the best movies of the year. He disappeared in that role and he didn't even need a pound of make-up and prosthetics to do it.

Don't even get me started on the LEGO movie not getting any nominations-- and I haven't even seen it, but come on Academy. Anyway, I'll be rooting for everything Boyhood that night, because Richard Linklater made Dazed & Confused and the Before Sunrise trilogy and he writes great female characters and he's basically my hero. OH, and Dick Poop. I hope that guy wins something.

  1. I could not get through Foxcatcher. I watched about 40 min and I said life is too short and turned it off. 100% agree about JG & Nightcrawler. Although Nightcrawler hit a little too close to home for me I still loved it.

On a totally separate note, how about Aniston not being nominated. I bet she's really upset. I feel like even though she's Jennifer Aniston all she really wants is the career Julianne Moore has.
