Is Ben Affleck's love life ruled by his career? An analysis.

Last June, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced they were getting divorced after ten years of marriage. It didn't take long for rumors (and photographs) to surface of Ben and the family nanny. And then there was that Vanity Fair interview that Jennifer Garner did (Lainey Gossip brilliantly calls it her "Lemonade"). If Nate Silver analyzed the split, there's a very good chance he'd say that Garner was winning the break-up.

But last week, People Magazine reported that Ben wants Jen back. And that they were in Paris together looking affectionate. I totally believe this shit-- BECAUSE Ben Affleck's love life is ruled by his career. Allow me to break it down for you:
Ben Affleck gets super famous and wins an Oscar after writing Good Will Hunting. He starts dating Gwyneth Paltrow who's probably the most famous actress of that time. She's fresh off of her break-up with Brad Pitt. It's a great look for his career, until.... Matt Damon starts dating Winona Ryder (Gwyneth's then-best friend). Here's what Affleck had to say about that in a 1999 Vanity Fair article:

Think back to the height of the Ben 'n' Matt frenzy, in 1997, when Affleck was daiting Paltrow and Damon was seeing her friend Winona Ryder. "It was so gay," Affleck says in the eight-year-old-girl sense of the word. "If I had gone by the tabloid stories of it, I would have been like `Look at these fuckin' chumps. I just want to smack these people.' And I kind of wanted to smack myself," he admits. "But it's one of those things you kind of can't help. What are you going to say? `Look, dude, don't go out with her. It'll look really weak.'"

So Ben Affleck acknowledges that who he dates and who his friend dates could make him look "weak"-- which is a problem, because that could damage his public image and career. It may not have been enough to end his romance with Paltrow, but it clearly bugged him. CUT TO:
Ben meets Jennifer Lopez on the set of Gigli. She basically leaves her husband for him and Bennifer takes over the world. Gigli turns out to be a huge flop (probably the biggest of his career) and that Jenny from the Block video doesn't do him any favors. His career and his image are on a downward spiral and he ends his engagement to JLo. (Side note: I still believe Bennifer are meant to be)
But his career slump shows signs of life after he marries Jennifer Garner. If JLo was considered his opposite, then Garner was far more wholesome and cookie cutter. He's white. She's white. They go to baseball games and farmer's markets together. It's a match made in heaven. It's during his marriage that Affleck wins acclaim as a director with movies like Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo which wins the Oscar for best picture. This is his moment of redemption. Sixteen years after winning an Oscar for writing Good Will Hunting, he's proven himself again. He's at the top of his career game even though he admits his marriage is work. (side note: all marriages take work, but not exactly what you want to highlight in a thank you speech).

And then the coveted acting roles come in. Working with David Fincher in the highly anticipated Gone Girl and getting to play Batman in the next installment of the franchise. Life is good. So good that Affleck doesn't really want to be married anymore. Why deal with getting your ego bruised at home when you're one of the most in-demand actors and directors in the industry? Why not have sex with the hot nanny?
the nanny: Christine Ouzounian
Because it will make America hate you. In Affleck's words, "it'll look really weak." And he figured that out pretty fast. I mean, does anyone even know what happened to Christine Ouzounian? Can someone give me proof of life?

And then this happened:

Who cares if Batman VS Superman made a shit-ton of money. That doesn't change the fact that post-divorce, post-Batman Ben Affleck is an internet joke. Of course the guy wants Jennifer Garner back. She improved his image, and whether there's actually any correlation-- his career bounced back as well.

Personally, I think it's boring if these two get back together. It's too bad Kate Winslet is married, because dating her would probably get Affleck that best director Oscar.
